Fiddlin' Pickin' and Singin' at the 45th Annual Arkansas Folk FestivaL
Mountain View, Arkansas
Each year hundreds of folk musicians and thousands of folk music fans arrive at Mountain View Arkansas for the annual Folk Festival to celebrate and enjoy old time country and blue grass music. The streets are lined with arts & craft booths, food wagons, and very few parking places. Everywhere one looks you find small groups of musicians gathered together making music.
The April Folk Festival is the premier musical event in Mountain View but by no means the only one. The area is home to six folk music theatres and performing venues (like Jimmy Driftwood's Barn) as well as the prestigious Ozarks Folk Center State Park that hosts celebrity concerts and musical events from April to November. Along with musicians, Mountain Home is a magnet for other crafts artisans - wood, iron, jewelry, instrument making, etc. and flea markets and antique shops.
Other major attractions are Blanchard Springs Caverns & Springs and canoeing, rafting & fishing on Sylamore Creek and the White River. |

Arkansas Folk Festival
The Court House Square is the center of activities during the festival.
The main stage is set up in front of the court house. People bring their own lawn chairs, which they carry from venue to venue as music happens practically any place where two or more musicians find a comfortable spot to sit and pick..
|
Around every corner of the court house is another folk group enjoying making music together. |
Part of the tradition of this festival is musicians just bring their instrument and find a group to join. A little later the guys standing and watching (at the left) will be "sitting in" and joining the music making.
Many front porches were filled with music makers. > > > |
Lots of cabanas on lawns offering crafts and food. . . including one offering quilts, long arm quilting services, and quilter supplies (right).

Shopping & Browsing in Mountain View
There are a number of antique stores, craft shops, flea markets, and gift shops within walking distance of the historic town square plus some restaurants and cafes where finger-lickin' good BBQs are the specialty - after all Arkansas is the home of the razorbacks (hogs)!
Looking east on Main Street by the Ironworks Blacksmith Shop & furniture store.
Across the street a husband waits on the "husband bench" for his wife to finish shopping in The Quilting Bee !
|
Mellon's Country Store is on the north edge of town and is packed with just about everything - their slogan is "If we ain't got it, you don't need it!" We couldn't escape without getting a bag full of fresh boiled peanuts.
