Michigan's Upper Peninsula South Shore of Lake Superior
In the sixty mile stretch just over the border from Wisconsin are some of the best waterfalls in Michigan. The falls on the Montreal River, those on the Black River and the Presque Isle River are not to be missed. The Black and Presque Isle are in national and state parks with very decent hiking trails and observation platforms for the falls, plus camping facilities.
Porcupine Mountain State Park contains one of the largest tracks of old growth forests east of the Mississippi. It also offers scenic mountain top vistas, mega miles of hiking trails, both rustic and modern campgrounds, and crystal clear rivers and lakes.
The Keweenaw peninsula is another UP jewel, especially during the Fall Color Season, offering many miles of picturesque shoreline drives and attractive villages whose roots go back to the 1800s. At the tip of the peninsula is Copper Harbor, an artisan community with several recreational amenities that make a popular destination for those who want to escape the pressures of urban living.
The eastern half of the UP offers more waterfalls, scenic drives along the lake, some excellent camping and rv parks, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park, and the historic Soo Locks in Sault Sainte Marie.

Ontario's North Shore
Two of Western Ontario's largest cities are on Lake Superior: Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay. Both have strong historical ties as camps of native peoples and later outposts of western voyageurs, traders and missionaries who opened up this territory for later settlement. Between the two cities are 410 miles of well maintained roads through largely unspoiled scenic geography. The highest mountains around the lake are in Ontario as well as the longest stretches of wilderness (although towns are frequent enough to not be in danger of running out of gas and the roads traveled enough that an emergency would not go unrecognized for long).
The only expensive part of traveling the Ontario leg of the Lake Superior Circle Route is gasoline and beer! The former can be somewhat alleviated by insuring you have a full tank of gas before you cross over the border (The total trip from border to border is less than 460 miles). As far as the price of beer - in my estimation the price is worth it! Otherwise you find prices reasonable for lodging, dining, and camping at Provincial Parks. The staff at the tourist information centers are quite helpful and the people you will meet along the way are friendly and typical of a more relaxed pace of living.
While the entire region around Lake Superior offers outstanding outdoor recreation, if fishing, hiking, canoeing, or kayaking are among your favorite passions, Ontario is hard to beat. Some terrific waterfalls too - some of which we still have to find.
