On Thursday morning April 10th, 2008 Jo and I walked by the Iron Kettle Restaurant as employees came running out telling us we better get away from the restaurant as a fire had broken out. Within a few minutes smoke leaked out the roof as employees rushed to get cars away from the building. By the time the first fire-fighting vehicle arrived, smoke had enveloped the building.

Eventually 3 fire departments joined together to contain the fire. While the building appeared to be a total loss, the brave firefighters' efforts prevented adjacent buildings from catching on fire.

The Iron Kettle had been a fixture and popular dining spot in Grand Rivers since the 1960s; according to a Channel 6 news story part of the restaurant complex traced back to 1890. Owner Chip Tullar, of the Patti's Settlement Tullar family, indicated his hope to restore the restaurant and continue its tradition.

The following pictures show, from our "front row" seat, the developing fire and fire fighters battling the fire.

< < < We held our breath as the chief reached the top of the ladder. Flames erupted and rushed towards him. I gasped expecting to see him fried . . . but he just kept focused on his job.

He turned on the water and began pushing back the flames and finally seeming to get the upper hand on the fire.

< < < With the fire now under control, it became a matter of continuing to pour water on it. It looks like the clown survived; I had expected him to melt in the heat of the fire.

As of October 27th, 2008 the Iron Kettle remained closed with no word on when or if it might re-open. (In the spring of 2009 the restaurant remained closed)
