Galena Dining Restaurant Review - Fried Green Tomatoes
Historic Galena, Illinois

Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant, Galena Illinois
Located in the historic 1838 Dowling Building, diners enjoying the fine Italian cuisine of Fried Green Tomatoes also get steeped in the history of Galena. At one time President Ulysses S. Grant worked in this same building when his father's leather shop was located here.

Comfortable seating in a warm atmosphere of old stone walls, rich wood, subdued lighting, and flowers.

Our lunch selections were: Grilled Salmon Salad -
Grilled salmon filet over spring mix lettuce with onions, peppers, and black olives topped with a sherry vinaigrette; Meat Lasagna -
Hearty meat lasagna, made the old-fashioned way, individually rolled and generously filled, then topped with mozzarella cheese and baked; and Mega Grilled Cheese Sandwiches -
Arugala and tomato, smothered with Mozzarella & Fontina cheeses served with tomato basil soup. We also had to have their signature appetizer - Fried Green Tomatoes - Lightly breaded, sliced green tomatoes, sauteed in olive oil, sprinkled with mozzarella and parmesan, on a bed of tomato sauce.
My Salmon Salad was nicely chilled and very fresh and crisp. The hot dishes were served hot and all were quite tasty. Portion size was good; Donna and Jo each took home half-sandwiches. The meal was accompanied by a delicious loaf of garlic and basil bread and their special house blend of olive oil. The loaf quickly disappeared! Service was excellent; water and beverage cups filled frequently and in general the wait staff was attentive.

Although very nicely dressed, Jo wasn't sure whether she wanted to accept after-dinner mints from this old codger! > > > |
