Dining on the deck of Dubuque's Star Restaurant overlooking the River Walk
On July 1, 2010 Jo and I finally had a chance to be in Dubuque at the dinner hour and on a beautiful warm day so we could dine on the deck of the Star Restaurant, overlooking the river front. Jo tried their signature burger and I had the spicy thai sandwich. Both were tasty, served hot, and were a generous portion size. The restaurant is located on the second story of the renovated 1898 Star Brewery building. Learn more about the Star Brewery on our Dubuque See & Do page. Also profiled on this page are the Fenlon Place inclined railway, the Casinos, and the historic shot tower.
On our Dubuque Home Page we covered the Mississippi River Walk, the downtown Arts district, and the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. Below are two more travel or visitor attractions: Dubuque's Eagle Point Park and nearby Balltown Iowa, home of the Breitbach Inn & Restaurant - Iowa's oldest continually operating tavern.

Eagle Point Park
Dubuque's Eagle Point Park is 164 acres on the top of a high limestone bluff above Lock & Dam #11 on the Mississippi River. There are a number of scenic overlooks of the river and while we there we actually saw an eagle soaring above the Eagle Point Pavilion.

A massive landing eagle greets visitors as they enter the park.

The evening we were at the park there was a free concert at the park's bandshell.

The Dubuque Trolley provides service to Eagle Point Park. Moment before these visitors were rewarded with seeing an eagle flying directly overhead.

The Indian Room and the Bridge Complex are two of several limestone pavilions built as WPA projects during the Great Depression. The numerous pavilions and gardens in the park show clear evidence of Frank Lloyd Wright's influence on architect Alfred Caldwells designs.
What I found particularly unique about this park are the numerous park structures and picnic areas sprinkled throughout the 164 acres. The park drive rambles up and down, around and through the woods, depositing picnic areas, pavilions, tennis courts, playgrounds, river view vistas and towers here and there and every where. Yet all these separate little park areas are linked together in the overall design of the park. It is an exceptional Dubuque treasure. |

Balltown Iowa
Yes Balltown really does have a ball diamond in the center of town. Perhaps the highest ball diamond in the state.

View from Home Plate on the ball diamond of Balltown Iowa.

A home run over the left field fence will travel practically to the next county before it comes to rest ! |

From the Balltown Overlook, one of the highest points along the Mississippi. In October the Dubuque Audubon Society sponsors a Hawk Watch here. Spotting scopes are available to the public for watching the migrating raptors. > > >

Oktoberfest at Breitbach's Country Tavern & Restaurant

Balltown's Breitbach's Country Restaurant is Iowa's oldest food and drinking establishment (1852). In October 2007 their "Bieer Goarden" was drawing people from miles around for country music, brats, beer, wine tasting, good conversation and fall harvest produce.

Wine Tasting, t-shirts, bird houses, pumpkins, gourds, potatoes and other fall harvest goodies were in abundance. |

The Great River Road between Dubuque and McGregor, IA is a great ride for motorcycling and Breitbach's is the ideal rest break for a beverage and truly great home cookin' food.

A sunny October day is also a fine time to take that classic car on a cruise. This beautiful Mercury was one of several classics that stopped at Breitbach's and the Ball Town Overlook.

In August 2010 Jo and I returned to Breitbach's to see how things were after their second disasterous fire destroyed the "new" Breitbach Country Tavern (see our blog entry). |
