Historic DeSoto Hotel & Green Street Tavern

Historic DeSoto House Hotel, Galena Illinois
Galena's DeSoto House is the oldest continually operating hotel in Illinois . . . first opening its doors in 1855. At that time, the hotel was six stories high, 250 rooms, and billed as the "largest hotel in the West." Twenty five years later, following fires and economic downturns in Galena, the top two floors were removed to downsize the hotel more appropriate to its demand.
Today, shops and boutiques line the first floor of the hotel facing Main Street; the second and third floors offer 55 guest rooms. Within the hotel complex are three restaurants, a banquet hall, a ballroom, and several meeting/conference rooms. While the hotel and its rooms retain its Victorian atmosphere, modern amenities such as suites, king size beds, color cable tv, and complimentary enclosed parking are tastefully blended into the architecture.

< < < The hotel's pub, the Green Street Tavern & Restaurant, is at the historic corner of Green and Main streets. In 1875 this space was the site of the Galena Express Office.

The pub atmosphere is warm and congenial. Jo and I had Reuben sandwiches and cold tap beers. > > >
The sandwiches were quite good and the beer cold with a nice head. Inside the hotel, the pub is reached from the main the lobby.
